For the benefit of society, culture and knowledge

Over the course of its history, the Corticeira Amorim has been actively committed to contributing to development in the economic, social and humanitarian fields, fostering initiatives in various areas such as culture, education, social solidarity and even scientific research. It is perhaps in the field of research that it clearly shows its uniqueness in generating knowledge for the whole cork sector.

It is the only player in the cork industry to own a non-profit landmark organisation for promoting research and knowledge about wine: the Amorim Academy.

Founded in 1992, it provides funding for research in oenology and innovative projects within the framework of wine.

However, Corticeira Amorim active role in the field of research goes even further - it is responsible for the most renowned award ever given in the cork sector: the Research Award for the «Enhancing the Value and Sustainability of the Cork Oak and its Associated Biodiversity». This initiative has taken place since 2008 and clearly reflects the concern for promoting the proper management of the cork oak forest.

Also in the field of knowledge, the Corticeira Amorim has a close relationship with education and is an active player in reinforcing the connection between the school/scientific community and business activity. It has contributed to the establishment of a chair for Portuguese Studies for INSEAD and recently established a partnership with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). In this context, it is funding scholarships for graduates from this renowned educational establishment in the United Kingdom and provides the travel for students to Portugal, to witness the stripping of the cork and visit the R&D laboratories of the Group.

The Social Responsibility of the Amorim Group also includes cooperation with a number of causes and institutions of socio-cultural interest, at local, national and international level. Among them, worthy of note is the sponsorship of the Serralves Foundation and Casa da Música, two important institutions in encouraging and providing cultural education, of which the Amorim Group is a Founding Member.

Concern for social balance

On a social level, concern for balance is one of the qualities that have accompanied the 140 years of activity of the Amorim Group - it was one of the first companies to provide workers with a refectory and a doctor, all the way back in 1938. With the turn of the century, Social Responsibility took on another dimension, and was extended to the community.

Currently, the Group is actively involved in interventions on a social, humanitarian and aid level, through collaboration with institutions for social integration, for minors at risk and support for the elderly, fire fighter brigades, the Portuguese Anti-Cancer League (Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro) and sports clubs, among others.

In 2008 the Group created the Albertina Ferreira de Amorim foundation, with a view to promoting solidarity and fostering human dignity in ethical, religious, cultural and civilisational dimensions. In addition to its social and cultural support side, this institution also plans to encourage scientific investigation in the field of cork preparation and processing, where the concession of awards in this field and others is envisaged.

Corticeira Amorim is also a partner, since its foundation, of the Bagos d'Ouro Association, which is dedicated to supporting disadvantaged children and young people in the Douro region by monitoring their school performance and progress and creating opportunities for the development of successful life projects.

Whether through supporting local communities or enabling actions which have a material national and international impact, the Social Responsibility of the Corticeira Amorim includes an action plan, designed with the clear purpose of contributing to the sustained development of people and institutions.
